March- leadership styles

In class we have been discussing many new topics. It think the topic of leadership styles is very interesting. Today we turned in the leadership style matrix that we completed. When I took the matrix test I was a team leader. It think that this is accurate. I also think that each person can change throughout their lives and move to different areas. I know when I was younger I was probably considered an authoritarian leader. As with other aspects of this class I also believe that people can change their style based on the situation or what type of group they are in.

The article we read had some different ideas as well. Discussing relational dialogue helped me to better understand what the article was trying to explain. We talked about how not just one person might lead but that there might be a need for emergent leaders in different areas. I think this is true in many situations. Since we are all in many different groups throughout our day I believe we should all take this in to consideration. How do you think trusting and creditability relate to relational dialogue?

  1. I also was shown as a team leader and i agree that i believe that its also accurate for myself. But at times i feel like i can do the other roles because i am not able to always lead in everything because i do not know everything. so there are times where i have to follow before i can lead. I have felt at times i have been the type of authoritarian leader but not when i was younger. i felt like this when i was on the football team at times like i was being to bossy.

  2. I agree completely. Leaders emerge with knowledge of the situation. If someone has good experience in a specific area, then they are likely to emerge as that leader. For example Calipari would be better off as a leader coaching basketball than football, just because that is where his expertise is.

  3. I was shown as an authoritarian leader, but I do believe that that is relative to every situation. Depending on the situation, I may be a different role player and someone else who may have an affinity for a certain area, might become the leader. Overall, our discussion of different leadership styles does give us valuable experience to enhance our own and to recognize which roles to play even when we aren't out in front.

  4. I agree that as leaders we can grow and progress, and that our leadership style may be situational. Relational dialogue is important because as Dr. Rickett's often says " we should work ourselves out of a job" this allows opportunities for empowerment and allows emergent leaders an opportunity to take on a leadership position. Relational dialogue allows for more of a partnership rather than a management orientation. Being an affective and ethical leader sets the grounds for building strong relationships, and dialogue between all members of an organization, team, etc. helps to create a more efficient and relational work experience.
